One of the items I hope to "achieve" this year is to lose weight. I'm definitely one of those yo-yo dieters that will change my eating habits for a bit, take some weight off, and than put it all back on. I've heard that the weight you seem to come back to is your "true weight". Whether true or not, it's not a good number, and for personal, wardrobe, and health reasons I need to drop some lbs.
There is the observation that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. I did a Google search to see who the original idea was attributed to, which turns out to be Maxwell Maltz in Psycho-Cybernetics from 1960. I also discovered that some dispute this as myth saying there isn't any research to back up this observation. Anyhow, 21 days does seem like a doable amount of time to try and change a behavior, thus I'm committing the next 21 days to giving up sweets. So no more scones, muffins, cookies, pies, candy, chocolate, etc. This will be tough for me because I always want something sweet after eating (in fact, I'm jonseing just looking at the picture of the cupcake, good thing it's one I took in May). I'm not going to do any calorie-counting or keeping track of food right now, as I'm just focusing on stopping the sweets, and hopefully as a result some of the other things will fall into place along the way. Part two of this challenge will be to add a third day of exercise to my current two days of cross training.
Perhaps I can provide Maxwell Maltz his necessary research for the 21-day observation. Although Rhonna, and many followers, have taken the 21 Challenge with great success.

6 thoughtful people had to say...:
Oh my, I should join you in your challenge. I have consumed more than my share of sweets this holiday season. I'm thinking about the red velvet cupcakes in the freezer this very minute. Good luck! I find that after about five days without sugar, I can easily pass on anything sweet. Something tells me it may be a bit harder this time.
That cupcake is not what I needed to look at at this point in the afternoon!!
I'm trying to watch what I eat too...same as you, not counting calories but just cutting out the snacking that I do. My weakness is any kind of chips. When I get home from work in the afternoon I go right for the chips....that's a habit I need to change. I would like to just not buy them but Bruce likes to have them with his sandwich at lunch.
Good luck with the 21 day challenge!

Jud and I did South Beach last summer and lost about 10-15 pounds each. One of the principles is going off all sugar for two weeks. The outcome is that you stop craving sugar. Then you start adding it very gradually, backing up if you start craving it again. It worked, though it was very painful! Possibly an example of the Maltz theory, huh?
Love your foto of this delish cupcake.... for sure... I can totally relate to what you are talking about! I have such a sweet tooth too, darn it. Has a lot to do with how our body handles our insulin, etc. To make a long story short...yes, I too told my husband I was going to ban the sugar splurge...so far so good:) I wish you luck....ok off to the gym:)
I have to agree that it is easier to modify certain things rather than count the calories or weigh and measure everything.
I find when I cut out the carbs and add more veggies and protein I do better.
I substitute a small fruit when I need that something sweet after eating....it helps.
Like you I go up and down...going to try and "acheive" and "accomplish" (my word for the year) this goal for myself this year as well.
Good Luck to us all!!!
not even a teeny weeny mini cupcake?
